Today’s release of the preliminary summary results of the 2017 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests show Australian students are continuing to make gains.
“Australia’s teachers are to be congratulated for the continuing improvement in NAPLAN results over the past ten years,” said IEUA Federal Secretary, Chris Watt.
“This improvement is highlighted by the progress in Year 3 Reading showing the average Australian Year 3 student in 2017 is approximately nine months ahead in reading compared to the average Year 3 student who participated in the first year of NAPLAN testing in 2008.”
Other highlights can be seen in the number of students who are progressing from lower to higher bands of achievement across all year levels and most domains.”
Mr Watt acknowledged NAPLAN is just one snapshot used by teachers in the school year to assess the progress of students nevertheless it still fails to give timely data to assist individual students in the classroom. He added the national, state and territory results could just as easily be obtained using sample surveys rather than the whole census.
“However, the improvement in results is a tribute to the hard-working, professional attitude and expertise displayed by IEUA members and staff in non-government schools and, in general, all teachers across the country.”
